EAST CORK JUNIOR A FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Cloyne             0:06                             Fr. O'Neill's            0:08

Cloyne made their exit from this year s East Cork championship following a disappointing encounter with Fr. O'Neill's at Castlemartyr last Sunday afternoon. Both teams had been waiting more than twenty weeks to play this game, a reply from the early Summer. Cloyne’s lack of match practice showed last Sunday, as they were forced to chase this game from early on. That said, the sides were closely matched and only a score separated them on the long whistle.

Fr. O'Neill's started well and in fact led three points to one after only five minutes. Cloyne’s score a fine point from Killian Cronin in the half-forward line - good play by Kevin O’ Lomasney, Iain Quinlan and Donal g Cusack setting up the score. Alan Brett made it double scores in the tenth minute and O'Neill's were indeed unlucky not to goal soon after; their shot denied by Victor Cusack doing solid work in the full-back line. Eoin and Domhnall O Sullivan were also working well in defence, alongside captain John Aherne.

Further out field S an Motherway was showing positively for the red and black and with our forwards threatening the O'Neill's goal a breakthrough seemed to be on the cards. Cloyne had chances, however some wayward shooting limited our progress. Alan Brett made it five for O'Neill's after twenty minutes, and it was up to Iain Quinlan from over forty yards out to make it two points for Cloyne just before half time.

Cloyne did up the tempo in the second half, however O'Neill's had that all-important four point cushion, which try as they might, Cloyne were unable to claw back. O'Neill's continued to come thundering forward, and only good work by Eoin O Sullivan and Phil Cahill could thwart their assault. Diarmuid O Sullivan had been grafting hard all afternoon and finally got his name on the score sheet in the fifth minute after he converted a placed ball.

Substitute Paidi O Sullivan had a goal opportunity, however his shot was taken to safety by the keeper. John Flavin further advanced O'Neill's lead from a free at the end of the third quarter. Diarmuid and Colm O Sullivan added points to reduce the deficit to two, but with time running out, Cloyne could do no more.

A disappointing result for the Cloynemen, when hopes of success had been high. However, on the day it was not to be. Thanks to the management team for their commitment and hard work during this campaign.

EAST CORK MINOR "A" FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Erins Own    5:06            St. Colman's    2:11

Heartbreak for St. Colman's at Carrigtwohill last Thursday evening, suffering defeat to Erins Own at minor level, or the second time in four days. In an encounter totally dominated by St. Colman's, Erins Own had lady luck on their side as vital scores came their way to snatch victory away from the visitors. St. Colman's held the upper hand at half-time on a 2:05 to 2:03 scoreline. However Erins Own were right back in it almost immediately on the resumption with a well-taken goal. Wayward shooting by the St. Colman's men was to prove costly in the end, and a number of shots were waved wide before Kenneth Donovan opened his side's account with a good point.

Good work by St.John Walsh and Padraig O'Sullivan was helping to open up the Colman's attack and put the Glounthaune team under pressure. Ronan Maguire followed with another point to edge St. Colman's ahead by one. Erins Own were back to level matters soon after determined to stay close to their opposition. Ian Smiddy took a good score from a placed ball, and further points from Ronan Maguire and Padraig O'Sullivan kept Colman's to the fore. Substitute Luke Cullinane wasn't making life easy for the Erins Own defence and Colman's were unlucky not to profit from a free after he was taken down illegally. Unfortunately it too strayed wide of the target.

St. Colman's were progressing well at this stage and one would have thought had enough to seal victory. An Erins Own attack on goal, however, changed all that. A shot on target cleared by the goalkeeper, was collected and driven to the back of the net to hand the advantage back to Erins Own. With time running out the pressure was now most definitely back on Colmans. Eoin Ivers, a tower of strength at fullback tried hard for his team but a last minute fifth goal for Erins Own finished this game as a contest, and indeed St. Colman's involvement this year. Huge disappointment for the lads on a night when hopes were so high.

U21 EAST CORK "B" FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

Cloyne    1:07            Castlemartyr    3:03

The hopes of Cloyne's young charges were dashed last Friday evening (May 7th) at Rostellan, where they were narrowly beaten to victory by a determined Castlemartyr side. Dreams of carrying silverware back home were cruelly snatched away at the final whistle. This game, played in brilliant sunshine certainly didn't disappoint the large crowd in attendance. Action packed, suspense filled - it had it all!

Both teams were very evenly matched in the opening stages, Thomas Ryan had Cloyne on the scoreboard within the opening five. Mike Naughton was clearing well out of defence and Domhnall O'Sullivan was working hard in the full-back line. Castlemartyr however were also trying hard and were rewarded with a good goal early on. Pádraig O'Sullivan had a fine point for Cloyne in the tenth minute, after some intelligent by Shane Aherne. Aherne was on hand minutes later to register his own first score of the evening. Stephen Ryan, on the half forward line, was also doing well at this stage. However, a number of bad wides form the Cloynemen in the run up to half time were to prove costly at the final whistle. Half time score: Cloyne 0:04, Castlemartyr 1:03.

Cloyne opened the second half brightly, with a well-taken point by Maurice Lynch. Goalkeeper Eamonn Dunne did well in the third minute, pulling off a fine save to deny Castlemartyr an almost certain goal. This set the Cloyne attack going and a Pádraig O'Sullivan shot on goal was miraculously saved by McGovern on the goal-line. Shane Aherne made no mistake minutes later when a long ball from outside found him lurking in around the square. A good strike to the back of the net saw Cloyne take a two point advantage - 1:05 to 1:03. Cloyne's joy was short-lived, as minutes later Castlemartyr were awarded a penalty. This shot, half-saved by Dunne, did however reach the back of the net - A brave effort by Eamonn Dunne none the less. Mike Naughton converted a shot from over 50 yards out in the sixteenth minute, and Shane Aherne added to his tally almost immediately afterwards from a 45'. Cloyne were still leading by that all-important solitary point at this stage. 1:07 to 2:03.

Castlemartyr were pressurising the Cloyne goal searching for that all-important winning score. Both sides were guilty of misses in the final quarter; however Cloyne were the happier, believing that they could hold out for victory. Alas, with only seconds remaining in injury time, it was a goal and victory for Castlemartyr. Almost immediately the whistle sounded.

Ecstasy for Castlemartyr, heartbreak for the Cloyne lads. A great display by this young team, hopefully they'll be back to go that one step further in 2005. Congratulations to all the panel on their hard work this year, and to manager Diarmuid O'Sullivan, and his selectors Ian McCarthy and Neil Reilly.

Cloyne              1:11                                          Glenbower Rovers              1:06

The junior “A” football team continued their good run last Sunday evening at Ahavine, with a comprehensive victory over Glenbower Rovers in this first round tie. This was truly a game of two halves, the gale force wind certainly controlling matters at either end of the field. Cloyne got off to a good start with Diarmuid O’Sullivan and Iain Quinlan each finding the target in the opening minutes. Indeed Cloyne were applying a lot of pressure at this stage, however failing to translate this into all-important scores.

Killeagh got their first, and only point of the half, from a 21-yard free at the end of the first quarter. Cloyne were handed a golden opportunity to surge ahead immediately afterwards, when a high tackle on Colm O’Sullivan was judged worthy of a penalty. However good goalkeeping by Pakie O’Mahony saved the Killeagh side on this occasion. Cloyne finished the half impressively – a brace of points from Conor O’Lomasney and both Colm and Diarmuid O’Sullivan, put six points between the sides on the short whistle.

Again it was Cloyne who opened the second half positively, Quinlan and Diarmuid O’Sullivan adding to their totals against a strong wind. Glenbower Rovers needed to do something quickly if they were to salvage this game, and it came in the shape of an Ian Lynch goal. This increased their momentum, and points from John O’Connor, Colm Power and Bugsy Barry drew them within striking distance of their opponents. Diarmuid O’Sullivan was however there to edge Cloyne further ahead facing into the final quarter.

A goal by substitute Pádraig O’Sullivan and a good point by Kevin O’Lomasney, again engineered by O’Sullivan, was enough to put this game out of Glenbower’s reach. A consolation point in the dying minutes did little to impact on the result. A good all-round performance by the Cloyne men, solid displays in key areas of the field. Work still to be done, but an encouraging and immensely important first round victory. Well done to all!
