CHAMPIONSHIP
July
3rd. Ballinacurra
Cloyne 0:09
Erins Own 1:11
Cloyne made their exit from this year's East Cork Junior "A" Football Championship, following a lack lustre contest with Erins Own, at Ballinacurra last Thursday evening. This game failed to gain any sort of momentum, as both teams served up a disappointing display of football, in front of a very small attendance.
Erins Own had the better of the early exchanges, and led by six points to no score after twenty minutes. Cloyne full-forward Diarmuid O'Sullivan registered their first score a minute later, and slowly Cloyne began to claw their way back to within reach of their opposition. Mike Naughton, mid-fielder Killian Cronin and O'Sullivan bringing Cloyne to within two points of the Glounthaune men on the short whistle. The Cloyne backroom team, acknowledging that they had a lot of work to do in the second half, buoyed their charges up at half-time, and a Cloyne recovery was well within the realm of possibility.
The red and black began the second half period in the same manner in which they ended the first half. Declan Motherway added a pointed free after a foul on Captain Conor Cusack. Diarmuid O'Sullivan levelled matters at six points apiece a minute later, and it was all to play for. Mike Naughton handed Cloyne the advantage soon after, in this, the brightest spell of the game. Both sides were however guilty of some very wayward shooting during the remainder of this match, which proved wearisome for the spectators.
Erins Own were a little more economical with their shooting than Cloyne and did manage to register three points in the final quarter. The final straw for Cloyne arrived in the shape of an Erins Own last minute goal, to end this match favourably for the visitors. Cloyne substitute Victor Cusack snatched an injury time point, but it was, at this stage, a case of too little far too late. Cloyne were simply unable to match the Erins Own final period display. The Glounthaune side march on; for Cloyne it's back to the drawing board.

EAST CORK JUNIOR "A" FOOTBALL
CHAMPIONSHIP
May
22nd Shanagarry
It was second time lucky for Cloyne last Thursday evening, as they outplayed a fit Castlemartyr outfit to progress to the second round of the East Cork Junior "A" championship. Following a disappointing defeat to Aghada a month ago, the Cloyne management and team knew they had to raise their game considerably this time if they intended to continue playing football into the Summer. And raise their game they did!
Diarmuid O'Sullivan, proved a major thorn in Castlemartyr's side, accounting for nine of Cloyne's total on the night. However, this was a good team effort; each player marshalling his own area of the pitch. Cloyne were first on the scoreboard within the first minute, when Diarmuid O'Sullivan finished a good pass from Conor Cusack. Castlemartyr however, then took control for the next quarter; a good point and a converted penalty goal placing them in a good position after fifteen minutes.
Cloyne didn't give up the chase, and six unanswered points before the short whistle saw Cloyne ahead by double scores at half-time. This was a vital period of dominance before the break, just as Castlemartyr were beginning to threaten. However one each from Declan Motherway and Killian Cronin, and four from the boot of full-forward O'Sullivan put paid to any intentions our opposition may have had!
Cloyne continued to do well in the second half; Declan and Sully adding to their tallies. Castlemartyr, as expected, were coming more into the game, and some fine points saw them claw their way back to within a score of their rivals. Nevertheless, the red and black did enough to hold out at the end.
Well done to the lads and their mentors on a fine victory. Disappointing to see such a small attendance at Shanagarry last week, hopefully more of the loyal Gael will be out next time!
