Match
predictions & forecasts have at times the uncanny nature defying a presumed
outcome of a contest. It happened at Jamesy Kelleher Memorial Park on Saturday
evening, when a Cloyne team upset the odds in this JBFC game. The game was
heavily influenced by the performance of the Lynch brothers,Maurice &
James.Maurice Lynch had an outstanding hour for Cloyne & one that belied
his years and capped his performance with a great goal.Cloyne
faced into the first half against a strong breeze but were first on the board
with a well taken James Lynch point after five minutes.Six minutes later a
Feargal O’Brien free put Cloyne two points up.Cloyne’s first half approach
& workrate was outstanding.Brian Fleming at centre half back excelled. After
24 minutes of play Cloyne increased the margin by 3 points and were unlucky not
to be further ahead when the Bride Rvrs.keeper palmed the ball into the
incoming James Lynch who was unlucky not to score but the keeper recovered to make
a wonderful save.It was 29 minutes before Bride Rvrs.registered their first
score which was quickly followed by a free on the half time whistle which they
converted. We faced the second half with the tie evenly balanced. It turned out
to be a hugely entertaining half hours football. After a minutes play Maurice
Lynch gathered the ball about sixty metres out,the Bride Rvrs.defence stood off
him as he weaved within 35 metres of goal, the resulting lobbed kick caught the
keeper unaware & off his line for a peach of a goal,it was the perfect
opening for Cloyne,Five minutes later it was that man again when he slotted
over a well taken free.Bride Rvrs upped the anti after ten minutes and the game
took on a new life.Within a ten minute spell Bride Rvrs.managed to claw their
way back into the game. Both teams swapped points,Cloyne with two, courtesy of
Feargal O’Brien. With the score at 1-06 to 0-07 in favour of Cloyne,Bride
Rvrs.were gradually breaking Cloyne’s grip on proceedings.Against the run of
play Cloyne were awarded a penalty and Feargal O’Brien’s well placed kick gave
the keeper no chance,it was an important goal at a crucial time in the game
because Rovers had Cloyne on the rack. With eight minutes remaining the
character of this Cloyne fifteen was well tested. On 22 minutes a converted free
brought Rovers within striking distance. With eight minutes remaining it was all
Bride Rovers and one wondered after all the hard work was Cloyne going to
suffer undeserved disappointment.Cloyne’s back line were brilliant and duly did
not panic. With 3 minutes to go Bride Rovrs.sustained pressure paid off when
they got a goal,we now had a one point game.Cloyne managed to hold on and
deservedly so.The work rate & commitment of this Cloyne fifteen fashioned
this hard earned win, they were worthy of the result and every player must be
congratulated in the disciplined manner in which it was achieved, well
done.Final score Cloyne 2-06 Bride Rvrs.1-08.

There was
a great amount of confidence about Cloyne and the manner in which they
approached this championship game.It showed in the first five
minutes.Their brand of football was entertaining & at the same time
exciting.Every player played for each other with commitment & purpose,it
was good to receive compliments from your opponents about the players approach
& how they went about the task in hand.It was indeed a good football
display from Cloyne, their off the ball running for the sixty minutes was a
major factor, the manner in which they supported each other was another. From the
throw in Cloyne never once took their foot off the pedal.Cluain Uamha can play
football as Carrigtwohill discovered in the first ten minutes, they had a
distinct swagger about their approach and how they went about their business,it
was good to watch,it was effective and you knew Cloyne had only one outcome on
their minds to win the game.Eoin O’Sullivan quickly opened Cloyne’s account
after two minutes with a well taken point, three minutes later it was Colm
O’Sullivan who pointed. We were then treated to a Kilian Cronin special,a
replica goal to the one he scored on Sunday morning against Aghada in the
league,Cloyne 1-02 & no reply from Carrigtwohill. After nine minutes Carrig
settled & began whittling Cloyne’s lead.A well worked move in the 9th
minute saw them pull back a point quickly followed four minutes later by
another. Both teams went through a ten minute spell of consecutive wides & the
tempo dropped slightly.Iain Quinlan then pointed for Cloyne.Carrigtwohill
pulled back a further three points(2 Frees). It was Paudie O’Sullivan who then
pointed for Cloyne on the half time whistle to leave the score at 1-04 to 0-05
in favour of Cloyne. The second half kicked off with Carrigtwohill being first
to register after a minute of play with a point. It was then that Cloyne called
a halt.Donal Óg Cusack’s influence on proceedings had a huge bearing in the
second half,he marshalled the defence & cajoled the midfield, his
distribution play in the second half was brilliant.Aidan O’Brien was man of the
match for Cloyne he never erred once,he gave an outstanding performance. In fact
the entire Cloyne defence was brilliant.Iain Quinlan added a further two points
& Paudie O’Sullivan followed with another point to bring the score to
Cloyne 1-07 Carrigtwohill 0-06.With 11 minutes gone in the second half we
witnessed a gem of a goal from that young man again Paudie O’Sullivan,a long
ball in & he knew what he was going to do while the ball was in flight,he
rounded his marker on the edge of the box, left hand corner of the
goals, game, set & match to the red & black.Conor Cusack then scored the
point of the game when he gave Cloyne an eight point advantage.Carrigtwohill
managed to pull a point back which was to be their last score of the game while
Colm & Paudie O’Sullivan added a further two points for Cloyne to wrap up
the game at 2-10 to Carrigtwohill’s 0-07.Cloyne’s style of play was very
impressive, the plan was effective and they completed the job with an air of
confidence.

You
win games by taking your chances,Cloyne didn’t take theirs & lost this U21
BFC tie against Fr.O’Neills.Not taking any credit from a well balanced
Ballymacoda side,in the end they deserved to win the game.Cloyne were first to score when man of the match Paudie O’Sullivan put
them ahead after 5 minutes.Almost immediately Fr.O’Neills signalled their
intentions when Cloyne’s keeper Philip Considine kept Cloyne’s slender lead
intact with a great save.Within a three minute spell O’Neills went into a two
point lead. Then on eighteen minutes an error by Maurice Lynch allowed
Fr.O’Neill’s in for an all important goal. This was the catalyst for O’Neills
with still no reply from Cloyne.Fr.O’Neills added a further two points to give
them a solid lead of 1-05 to Cloyne’s 0-01 with about ten minutes to go before
the break.Within that ten minute spell Cloyne totally transformed the shape of
the game.We had two fast points from Thomas Ryan & Paudie O’Sullivan,Cloyne
were gradually getting to grips with the situation. With about four minutes
remaining of the first half Cloyne totally dominated.Cloyne were awarded a free
which Paudie O’Sullivan failed to convert but within seconds Cloyne were
awarded a penalty which was duly converted by that man again Paudie
O’Sullivan,it now stood at 1-05 to 1-04 in favour of Fr.O’Neills.Paudie
O’Sullivan levelled the game at 1-05 a piece just on the half time
whistle.Prior to this, Cloyne squanderd at least three scoring chances which
would have given them a commanding lead at the interval.Cloyne were first to
register in the second half with a Thomas Ryan point and it seemed as if Cloyne
were going to continue where they left off in the closing stages of the first
half. The joy was short lived,Fr.O’Neills with a well worked move which started
with their number 8 who was hugely influential throughout the entire game
caught the Cloyne defence flat footed,Philip Considine made a great save only
to parry the ball into the path of the incoming O’Neills forward to score the
goal that brought them back into the game. Both sides swopped points in the
intervening quarter of an hour,Thomas Ryan & Paudie O’Sullivan keeping
Cloyne in touch. With 16 minutes gone in the second half Fr.O’Neills 2-09 Cloyne
1-08, a mix up in the O’Neills defence allowed Alan Reilly in to score a
decisive goal to narrow the margin to a point.Game on!!.Unfortunately it was to
be Cloyne’s last score.Fr.O’Neills added a further four points to finish on a
scorline of 2-13 to Cloyne’s 2-08.Fr.O’Neills were impressive,they played a
nice brand of football, kept their gameplan simple & adhered to it,on the
other hand Cloyne will rue too many missed chances when the game was there for
the taking.Domhnall O’Sullivan, James Northridge,Paudie O’Sullivan & Thomas
Ryan were impressive for Cloyne.

Cloyne 5-17 Aghada
0- 04
Realistically
the game never reached the heights one would expect in a local derby.Cloyne
proved too strong for near neighbours Aghada in this Div.1 football league game, played
in ideal conditions in Cloyne. It was over as a contest after twenty minutes
with Cloyne leading by 1-10 to Aghada’s 0-01.It was a good solid performance
from Cloyne which must have pleased Timmy O’Sullivan & John O’Lomasney very
much with the St.Patrick’s Day championship encounter with Carrigtwohill on the
horizion. It was good to see Paul O’Donoughue & Feargal Condon still turning
out for Aghada, they have always been great campaigners for the green shirt.
