HURLING REPORTS 2005

GREAT SCENES AS ST.COLMANS LIFT COUNTY MBH  TITLE

St.Colmans 3-08 Barryroe 2-10

Great scenes of excitement greeted the final whistle in this county B minor hurling final as jubilant St.Colmans supporters poured onto the pitch in Brinny at the weekend to celebrate a momentus & historic win for the Cloyne/Russell Rvrs. minor amalgamation. This win looked highly unlikely for about three quarters of the contest as Barryroe who had some wonderful exponents of the game in their ranks showed wonderful determination & composure & really put it up to the men from the hurling stronghold of Imokilly. Both teams had very impressive wins in the semi finals.Barryroe accounted for Tom Kenny’s Grenagh & St.Colmans taking the honours in style against Ballygiblin from Avondhu.

After a shaky opening by both teams it was Barryroe who were first to raise the white flag when their highly skilful forward John O’Donovan pointed from a free. This was quickly followed by a long range Paudie O’Sullivan free.In a three minute spell on the 15th & 18th minutes it was O’Donovan again who netted twice,The first coming when he followed up after a great Alan Reilly save in the St.Colman’s goal to score from close range. The second goal came after some hesitancy in the St.Colman’s defence.Four minutes later the same man increased the Barryroe margin with another well executed point. With 22 minutes gone Barryroe looked as if they had the game sewn up when they led by 2-02 to 0-01.

Paudie O’Sullivan with a trademark free kept St.Colmans in touch, after an excellent solo run he then setupTomas Ryan for an outstanding goal as the interval beckoned.Going in for the break St.Colmans had restored respectability to the scoreline at a crucial stage of the game with a goal now separating the teams.

The second half started with both teams exchanging points courtesy of Brian O’Donoghue for Barryroe & Paudie O’Sullivan for St.Colmans.Barryroe then took control of the contest with four long range points in quick succession that gave the a seven point advantage. With about 13 minutes left on the clock and Barryroe leading by double scores (2-08 to 1-04) the landscape was not of a healthy nature for the men from Imokilly.Entering this game the St.Colman’s mentors were concerned at the age level of this very young side,7 of which are still u16 & that they might struggle to curtail  a more physical Barryroe outfit.,this proved to be the case. The master stroke occurred with the moving of Alan Reilly from goals to the forward line when he narrowed the margin with a well taken goal with 8 minutes remaining. It was what St.Colmans badly needed at this stage of the game.A renewed confidence enveloped the young St.Colman’s side as they took the game by the scruff of the neck in the closing ten minutes.Antoin Walsh,James O’Sullivan,Tom O’Shea,Paudie O’Sullivan & Mikey Walsh began making inroads as they took control.Tadgh Crowley,Maurice Lynch,David Jermyn & Richard Barry dominated in defence.Barryroe pointed against the run of play & were now enjoying a 5 point cushion.Paudie O’Sullivan’s accurate free taking narrowed the margin to 2 points after fouls on himself & the very lively Anthony Walsh who was causing havoc to the Barryroe defence.Once again Barryroe courtesy of Tadgh Harrington made it a three point game with an excellent  long range strike from deep inside his own half.Anthony Quinlan now operating on the edge of the square set up captain Jamie Costine only to see his shot that had goal written all over it shave the top of the crossbar to leave Barryroe with a two point margin & two mimutes left on the clock.A long sideline puck from St.Colmans was only cleared as far as the 21 metre line when the inrushing Tom O’Shea with only one thing on his mind rattled the back of the Barryroe net,in what was a fitting manner to secure a county title,it was now St.Colmans 3-08 Barryroe 2-10,heartbreak for Barryroe after so much domination but the accolades must go to the never say die mentality of a wonderful young St.Colmans side. This St.Colmans team have trained since early March culminating in at least 50 sessions & it was this comittment that carried them through the last ten minutes of a memorable contest.Going into the game manager Neil Reilly said “that if St.Colmans were within shouting distance of Barryroe with five minutes remaining that their fitness level would take the tie”a very accurate observation indeed.Congratulations to the St.Colmans team, mentors Neill Reilly,Micheal Walsh,Pa.O’Shea,Dick Fitzgerald & of course the “alright on the night man”the unflappable Dermi O’Shea, congratulations to you all.

East Cork Oil Sponsored JAHC

Cloyne 1-06 Russell Rvrs. 1-10

This one will not enter the realms of being described as one the classic local derbies. It was an uneventful hours hurling that never lived up to the hype that surrounded the fixture. It will only be remembered for all of Cloyne’s scores coming from David Ring and the dominance of Kevin Hartnett. The first half belonged to Rovers as they swept aside Cloyne’s ambitions of progressing. After 3 minutes Rovers went into pole position with a sweetly pointed free. This was the trend for the first quarter of an hour as Rovers picked off point after point. With 12 minutes gone Rovers raced into a four point lead with Cloyne still in the starting blocks.A David Ring free opened Cloyne’s account midway through the half.this was cancelled out by another pointed free from Rovers. With 11 minutes of the first half remaining & Rovers enjoying a 6 point advantage Cloyne managed to make an impact on proceedings. After some good work by Sean Motherway & Aidan O’Brien Cloyne were awarded a free about 35 metres out,David Ring obliged with a well struck goal, this seem to add some urgency to the Cloyne challenge, not for long. Two minutes later Rovers cancelled out the Cloyne upsurge with a well taken goal.David Ring added a point just before the half time whistle to leave the score at 1-08 to 1-02 in favour of the Shanagarry men.

For the first quarter of the second half we witnessed a rejuvenated Cloyne fifteen,if the same had occurred in the opening quarter we might have been looking at a different scenario. After 2 minutes it was David Ring with a well taken point from play to narrow the margin. In a 2 minute spell he added another 2 points from frees. It was now down to a 3 point game, the introduction of Christopher Ring at the break had made an impact. This was Cloyne’s half as they shut out the Rover’s second half challenge.Nine minutes gone once again a David Ring free brought it down to 2 points, still no reply from Rovers as Cloyne whittled down their advantage. With Cloyne dominating the second half they failed to capitalise on the progress they had made.It was 20 minutes of the second half before Rovers scored (65).They then added another point (F) with about 2 minutes remaining.Russel Rovers deserved the laurels on the night, but maybe if Cloyne had opened the first half in the manner of the second, the landscape might have taken on a different shape, this was not the case & Russell Rvrs.deservedly took the spoils.Graham Fleming,Aidan O’Brien & James Nyhan put in a good hours graft for Cloyne.

Cloyne:Alan Reilly,Tom O’Shea,John Aherne,James Northridge,Graham Fleming,James Nyhan,James Lynch,Vincent Cusack,Ross McCarthy,Thomas Cahill,Aidan O’Brien,David Ring(1-06),Eamon Dunne,Sean Motherway,Maurice Lynch,

CLOYNE DISMANTLE ROCKIES

Evening Echo Senior Hurling Championship

Cloyne 2-22 Blackrock 1-05

The weather forecast for Saturday was for gales gusting between eighty & a hundred miles per hour,it materialised in Carrigtwohill in a red & black format & left a trail of destruction in it’s aftermath,Blackrock bore the brunt of it as they were unceremoniously savaged by Cloyne. It was one of Cloyne’s finest hours in hurling & was atonement for the semi final heartbreak of 2003.

Blackrock hit the ground running when with two minutes gone they registered their first point, they intended sending out a clear message that they were not going to hang about.Three minutes later Cloyne were awarded a side line ball about 45 metres out,Diarmuid O’Sullivan took a gem of a cut, straight between the sticks all square.Blackrock were quick to reply two minutes later with a point & on nine mins.increased their lead with a well placed free. The game then took a dramatic turn,Cloyne were awarded a 65,Maurice Cahill duly obliged. From then on Cloyne went into overdrive as they gradually set about taking Blackrock to pieces.Paudie O’Sullivan levelled matters after eleven mins.with a free. From the puck out,Mike Naughton won the ball and delivered a low pass straight to Phil Cahill who neatly flicked it to Paudie O’Sullivan who gave Frank Barry no chance as he drove it low to the back of the net.A minute later Diarmuid O’Sullivan added another point from a free. This was quickly followed by a wonder point from Victor Cusack who was causing the Blackrock defence major headaches.Phil Cahill then turned his marker with some sweet stick work to push Cloyne further ahead on 17 mins. The score stood at 1-06 to 0-03 in favour of Cloyne. There then occurred an off the ball incident in the middle of the pitch involving Diarmuid O’Sullivan which saw play held up for over 2 minutes, this I feel was as result of early niggling after 5 mins.which was not curtailed and was allowed develop and frustration boiled over,it was not at all pleasant. When play resumed Maurice Cahill added to Cloyne’s tally with two wonderfully struck 65s on 25 & 28 minutes.John Cotter then struck an excellent point off balance. With time added on Paudie O’Sullivan struck another free quickly followed by a Phil Cahill point.Cloyne had the Rockies where they wanted them at the interval with a mountain to climb as they led by 1-11 to 0-03.It was obvious Blackrock were going to throw everything at Cloyne at the resumption. That notion was soon dispelled when within a minute of the restart a perfectly executed Diarmuid O’Sullivan pass found Conor Cusack who made no mistake with a trademark goal, there was no “miss of the year”this time, you do not give Conor Cusack that amount of leverage & expect not to pay the price. With three minutes gone Phil Cahill added another point,at this stage Blackrock had not scored since the 9th minute of the first half. The Cloyne full back line was magnificent,Eoin O’Sullivan Kilian Cronin & Declan Motherway caused untold frustration to the Rockie’s full forwards.Maurice Cahill is as good as they come, his long range shooting is excellent. With 5 minutes gone Blackrock pulled back a point. This was quickly cancelled out by a Paudie O’Sullivan free.John Cotter & Paudie O’Sullivan(F) added another brace of points to consilidate the red & black lead just before Liam Meaney pulled back a goal for the Rockies after ten minutes ,it was too little too late as Cloyne tantalised them with their sharp accurate passing. With twenty minutes remaining Blackrock’s frustration was evident, their game plan in tatters led them to conceding five frees in the closing quarter which Paudie O’Sullivan duly converted. It got even worse when Joe Young & Wayne Sherlock already on yellow cards took early showers.Iain Quinlan was having a better second half after an uncomfortable start, his contribution was much more effective,he seems to be finding things difficult in the left half forward position in his last few outings with his play lacking the fluency he has become known for.Blackrock pulled back another point with 14 mins.remaining which was to be their final contribution of the evening while Cloyne went on to add another six points. After last year’s county final it was widely thought would Declan Motherway & Phil Cahill withstand the rigours of another SHC campaign. On Saturday evening’s performance both players have a huge contribution to make,Declan Motherway had a faultless hour & has never looked sharper. On the other hand Phil Cahill was Cloyne’s ace in the pack, provider, playmaker & stick wizard, his deft touches created ample opportunities for the Cloyne forwards. On the night Cloyne ripped Blackrock apart who for most of the second half were rudderless. It was one of Cloyne’s finest hours & the manner & style in which they executed the task left a lot of the supporters in awe & disbelief at the scoreline. To say Cloyne were good is not an accurate description of their performance, they were simply breathtaking.

Cloyne:Donal Og Cusack,Eoin O’Sullivan,Kilian Cronin,Declan Motherway,Diarmuid O’Sullivan(0-2 1F),Maurice Cahill(0-3 65s),Michael Naughton,John Cotter(0-02),Domhnall O’Sullivan,Colm O’Sullivan,Victor Cusack(0-02),Iain Quinlan(0-01),Padraig O’Sullivan(1-08 0-8 from frees),Phil Cahill(0-3),Conor Cusack(1-01)

Evening Echo SHL : Glen Rvrs.2-10 Cloyne 1-10

For the opening seven minutes Cloyne’s intentions of taking the points in this SHL tie were of a positive nature. The Glen soon dismantled any notions with a powerful first half display that left Cloyne trailing by 2-08 to 0-04 at half time.Cloyne were first to open the scoring with a point from midfielder Domhnall O’Sullivan after two minutes.A minute later Conor Cusack had Cloyne two points to the good. From the resulting puck out the Glen managed to pull a point back. There then followed one the best moves of the the half when Victor Cusack combined with Phil Cahill to put Cloyne 0-03 to 0-01 up with four minutes gone. After this the Cloyne challenge collapsed. In a four minute spell the Glen were in front after converting 3 consecutive frees.Cloyne were all over the place as the Glen dominated midfield. With fourteen minutes gone a dreadful error by James Nyhan allowed the Glen in for their first goal.Iain Quinlan managed to pull a point back. The Glen continued to pick off long range points which was a major factor in the lead that they now enjoyed. As Cloyne struggled to contain them for the remaining ten minutes of the half the Glen were gifted another goal. With twenty minutes gone Cloyne had a mountain to climb as the Glen led by 2-08 to Cloyne’s 0-04.As half time approached one could be forgiven for thinking that the Glen were going to run riot in the second half with the advantage that they enjoyed,we were wrong!

Within two minutes of the restart Cloyne were awarded a penalty & Phil Cahill duly obliged when he struck a cracker to the back of the net,Cloyne needed this, the clawback of the Glen’s lead had started and Cloyne in the second half were a totally different team.Three minutes into the restart the Glen converted another long range free which incidentally was to be their only score until the 27th minute of the second half.Cloyne totally outplayed them.Iain Quinlan who up until now was having a relatively quiet evening at left half forward was beginning to make an impact. The constant fouling of Colm O’Sullivan was stemming the flow of the game, the reaction was a worrying aspect for Cloyne & one that needs addressing,in another situation it might not be looked upon too kindly.Cloyne dominated the game for the entire second half and scored some very good points,a feature absent in the first half.Cloyne might have collected the points and their second half performance warranted this but their total of nine missed scoring chances did not help matters and saw the Glen come out on top by the odd goal.

Cloyne:Sean Motherway,Declan Motherway,Kilian Cronin(0-1),Eoin O’Sullivan,Brian Fleming,James Nyhan,Michael Naaughton,John Cotter,Domhnall O’Sullivan(0-2),Victor Cusack,Colm O’Sullivan(0-1),Iain Quinlan(0-3),Aidan O’Brien,Phil Cahill(1-1),Conor Cusack(0-2)

Evening Echo SHL: Cloyne 4- 12  Delaneys 1- 10

With just over four weeks to Cloyne’s senior hurling championship tussle with Blackrock they continued their build up with a good solid SHL performance against Delaneys.Cloyne’s second half form was excellent in which they outclassed Delaneys to secure the league points.

Cloyne lined outt with quite a few positional changes and minus the services of some of the more experienced players. The game started brightly for Cloyne when after 3 minutes Conor Cusack put Cloyne in front with a superb goal. For the first 10 minutes it looked as if the game was shaping up as a landslide win for Cloyne, the observation was premature.Paudie O’Sullivan pushed Cloyne ahead with a well pointed free from about 45 metres after 5 minutes.Aidan O’Brien having a very good first half made it 1-02.Conor Cusack came very near to getting a second goal, but the Delaney’s keeper pulled of a string of successive top drawer saves, one of them once again from Conor Cusack from close range was goal keeping of the highest standard.Delaneys registered their first point with 13 minutes gone, this was quickly followed 2 minutes later by a goal,3 minutes later it was all square.Delaneys notched up another point to give them the lead.So effectively in a 6 minute spell they wiped out Cloyne’s advantage.James Nyhan restored parity with a well taken point after twenty minutes.Four minutes later Phil Cahill with a perfectly executed goal restored Cloyne’s lead.Delaneys hit back with two excellently struck points, both from deep inside their own half to level matters. On the half time whistle they pointed again to give them a one point lead at the interval Cloyne 2-03 Delaneys 1-07.So after all Cloyne’s dominance of the first half they found themselves trailing.

The second half was only 3 minutes old when a Paudie O’Sullivan free set Cloyne up nicely. This was quickly followed by a James Nyhan point to restore Cloyne’s lead. The second half was just six minutes old when a well worked move saw James Nyhan set Phil Cahill up for his second goal of the game.Three minutes later Delaneys got a point which was their first score of the second half.Cloyne replied with an Iain Quinlan goal. The game was gradually slipping away from Delaneys as Paudie O’Sullivan,Aidan O’Brien & Mike Naughton pushed Cloyne further ahead with consecutive points,Cloyne were picking off points at random,a feature that has been absent in their last few outings.Delaneys added a further 2 points on 15 & 20 minutes, but Cloyne replied with 2 points from James Nyhan & one each from Maurice Cahill & Paudie O’Sullivan(65).It was a well balanced performance from Cloyne. The midfield pairing of Domhnall O’Sullivan & Iain Quinlan was very impressive while at the back Brian Fleming gave nothing away in a reshuffled defence. In the end Cloyne were fully deserving of the points.

Cloyne: Alan Reilly,Declan Motherway,Brian Fleming,Eoin O’Sullivan,James Lynch,Maurice Cahill(0-01),Mike Naughton(0-01),Iain Quinlan(1-0),Domhnall O’Sullivan,James Nyhan(0-4),Aidan O’Brien,(0-02),John Cotter,Padraig O’Sullivan(0-04),Phil Cahill,(2-0),Conor Cusack,(1-0)

Evening Echo SHL: St.Catherines 1- 08  Cloyne 2- 08

For most of the first half of this SHL tie in Ballynoe on Sunday evening,Cloyne encountered what can be best described as a stubborn St.Catherines side who refused to be overawed by last year’s county finalists.Cloyne minus the services of Diarmuid O’Sullivan & Donal Og Cusack who were on inter county duty found it difficult to come to grips with the game for the whole of the first half. After four minutes St.Catherines were first on the board with a well taken point, this was the pattern for the first fifteen minutes.Cloyne allowed St.Catherines dictate the game and they enjoyed a three point advantage with twelve minutes played.Paudie O’Sullivan was first to raise the white flag for Cloyne and basically that was Cloyne’s contribution until the 28th minute.Cloyne had a succession of wasted chances one after the other, while on the other hand St.Catherines added a further three points. With 17 minutes gone Cloyne were awarded a free about 30 metres out with Paudie O’Sullivan opting to go for goal St.Catherines duly dealt with it.Victor Cusack,Iain Quinlan,James Nyhan & Domhnall O’Sullivan all had opportunities to keep Cloyne in touch but failed to do so.With 28 minutes minutes gone St.Catherines enjoyed a five point advantage,Iain Quinlan struck a well taken point which seemed to jolt Cloyne into action.Maurice Cahill quickly followed with a trademark point from inside his own half, then just on half time Paudie O’Sullivan narrowed the margin with another point,so in the space of two minutes Cloyne were back in the contest with a half time score of 0-6 to 0-4 in favour of St.Catherines.The second half started with referee Gerry O’Connell barely having time to get the whistle out of his mouth, when Conor Cusack had the ball in the back of the net.It was the perfect start for Cloyne. Two minutes later it was Paudie O’Sullivan who stretched Cloyne’s lead with another point. This was Cloyne’s best spell where they eventually took control of the game.James Nyhan went narrowly wide after 6 minutes,a minute later Paudie O’Sullivan stuck another point over the bar with still no reply from St.Catherines,This was quickly followed by a Victor Cusack point.Cloyne were now enjoying a four point advantage. It was fourteen minutes before St.Catherines got their first score of the second half. With 21 minutes gone St.Catherines were awarded a free and duly converted. From the puck out Iain Quinlan gathered the ball found Paudie O’Sullivan on the right who’s inch perfect pass found James Nyhan, back of the net,Cloyne 2-07 St.Catherines 0-08.Paudie O’Sullivan added another point with about four minutes remaining. As full time approached St.Catherines pulled a goal back from a well struck free,by this time Cloyne were well in control. Not a game that will live in the memory.St.Catherines scored 1-04 from frees where on the other hand Cloyne had eight scoring chances go wide in a game that they really should have exerted a lot more dominance.

Cloyne: Alan Reilly,Declan Motherway,Kilian Cronin,Eoin O’Sullivan,Brian Fleming,Maurice Cahill(0-01),Mike Naughton,Iain Quinlan,Domhnall O’Sullivan,James Nyhan(1-0),Colm O’Sullivan,(0-01),John Cotter,Padraig O’Sullivan(0-05),Victor Cusack,(0-01),Conor Cusack,(1-0)

Abernethy Cup S/F: Cloyne 4- 07  Bride Rvrs. 2- 15

A goal after thirty seconds of play & a goal at the death were two determining factors of the game.An Abernethy Cup semi final that bounced all over the place in the last fifteen minutes.Cloyne conceded a multitude of frees that Bride Rvs.accepted & coverted. After a bright opening which saw Phil Cahill raise the green flag after thirty seconds the omens were looking good.It took Bride Rvrs.a while to settle & get some rhythm into their play after such a hammer blow.Mike Naughton then slotted over a point to make it 1-01 for Cloyne.Bride Rvrs.pulled back a point with five minutes gone. Then with a wonderfully executed move between Mike Naughton & Colm O’Sullivan which had goal written all over it should have pushed Cloyne further ahead but failed to materialise. In a ten minute spell Bride Rvrs.were on level terms until a 16th minute point by Mike Naughton gave Cloyne the advantage once again.A minute later Victor Cusack pointed & Cloyne seemed to to have regained control of the game.James Nyhan added another point on 18 mins. The final ten minutes of the first half was where the game changed.A scrambled ball in the Bride Rvrs.goalmouth saw Paudie O’Sullivan on hand to hook it over the goaline to give Cloyne a 2-04 to 0-05 lead with nine minutes of the first half remaining. The intervening nine minutes of the first half was one of huge importance for Bride Rvrs.when they scored which could be considered two of the most important points of the game on 29 & 30 mins.Cloyne who dominated the first half could not manage to drive home their superiority, that is why those two points were crucial,Bride Rvrs.established that Cloyne were willing to give away frees at random,it was an observation that they utilised. At half time after all Cloyne’s hard work it was a respectable 2-04 to 0-07,

The first quarter of the second half belonged to Rovers, they dragged Cloyne all over the pitch.Cloyne’s penchant to give away free after free played into Bride Rvrs.hands.Cloyne’s back line normally the foundation of the team was exposed several times & Cloyne found the Rvrs.forwards causing them a lot of concern. With 7 minutes gone Bride Rvrs levelled the game.A lobbed ball saw Sean Ryan finish it to the back of the net. This was quickly followed by a Diarmuid O’Sullivan point. In the final fifteen minutes of the game the landscape completely changed,in a six minute spell Bride Rvrs.scored five points while Cloyne replied with two points courtesy of Colm & Paudie O’Sullivan on 14 & 18 minutes.A two point advantage, Bride Rvrs.1-12 Cloyne 2-07.Nine minutes remaining,”the bacon well & truly sizzling”.Cloyne are awarded a free 30 metres out,Diarmuid O’Sullivan makes no mistake, low & hard to the back of the net & Cloyne have a one point advantage. The next nine minutes was where Cloyne gifted Bride Rvrs.when they reverted to a ragged style of play, constant fouling & from this Bride Rvrs.notched up three points to give them a two point advantage.Diarmuid O’Sullivan’s goal should have been the basis on which Cloyne won the game.Just as the end of normal time approached Phil Cahill got on to the end of a long ball from midfield to give Denis Fitzgerald no chance with a well taken goal, once again Cloyne had the advantage. From the puck out Bride Rvrs.were awarded a free in the middle of the park,a lobbed ball into the edge of the square which the Cloyne backs should have cleared, was collected by Brian Murphy who scored a goal with the last puck of the game to give Bride Rvrs.a two point lead with 34 minutes gone.Cloyne in their previous three outings seem to be having difficulty scoring points, while Bride Rvrs.in this game scored seven points from frees,an alarming amount of frees to concede by any standard.

Cloyne: Donal Óg Cusack,Eoin O’Sullivan,Kilian Cronin,Brian Fleming,Domhnall O’Sullivan,Diarmuid O’Sullivan(1-01),Declan Motherway,Iain Quinlan,Mike Naughton(0-02),James Nyhan(0-01),Colm O’Sullivan,(0-01),John Cotter,Phil Cahill(2-00),Padraig O’Sullivan(1-01),Victor Cusack,(0-01)

Evening Echo Sponsored Senior Hurling League

Cloyne 4-02 Erins Own 1-10

Cloyne’s opening senior hurling league game consisted of a non eventful first thirty minutes which saw them register an Aidan O’Brien point three minutes before the break. This basically sums up Cloyne’s first half performance. It was not pretty stuff to watch, wide after wide & lack lustre hurling.Erins Own made all the running. From the throw in they came at Cloyne head on,would not allow Cloyne get any momentum into their game and literally savaged the backline. In a fifteen minute spell Erins Own had notched up seven points with no reply from Cloyne.By Cloyne’s standards it was a disasterous opening thirty minutes.

The transformation by Cloyne in the second half as they say “was well worth the admission fee”.Cloyne’s young master Padraig O’Sullivan made the opening twenty minutes his own,in a blistering spell the game was turned on it’s head. The introduction of Victor Cusack at the break set the wheels in motion. He ran at the Erins Own defence & dismantled it.This is what Cloyne do best.it was a shrewd move by the management team. The second half was three minutes old,Paudie O’Sullivan gathered a geat pass from Phil Cahill, hit it low off the ground into the top corner of the net.Erins Own hit back with a point  then followed up with another point four minutes later. On fourteen minutes Victor Cusack clipped a low pass into Paudie O’Sullivan and we had another replica goal.Cloyne 2-01 Erins Own 0-09.The final fifteen minutes was tremendous,Erins Own put another point up on the board which was quickly followed by another great Paudie O’Sullivan goal. The feature of his three goals was that each one was honed to suit the situation & circumstances, that’s what made them special & the manner in which he executed them, this young man is a delight to watch whether it is hurling or football. With four minutes remaining David Ring proved how deadly he can be at close range when he gave Cloyne a four point advantage with a well taken goal.Erins Own pulled back a goal with two minutes remaining to narrow Cloyne’s lead to a point. The remaining two minutes saw Erins Own throw everything at Cloyne, but too little too late.Erins Own had Cloyne on the rack in the first half,Cloyne were not at the races.Erins Own did not capitalise on this in the second half, they gave Cloyne the freedom to do as they wished ,but Victor Cusack was the ace in the pack, that is the reason why Cloyne collected the points & Erins Own did not,the mathematics were easy to equate at the end.

Cloyne:Sean Motherway,Ross McCarthy,Kilian Cronin,Eoin O’Sullivan,Declan Motherway,Maurice Cahill,Domhnall O’Sullivan,Iain Quinlan,Aidan O’Brien,(0-01)James Nyhan,Colm O’Sullivan,John Cotter,Padraig O’Sullivan(3-01),Philip Cahill,David Ring (1-00)

Cloyne 6-14 Sarsfields 3-04

Not a good game by any standards,Cloyne were far too strong for Sarsfields, the longer it went on the worse it got & the competitive edge went out of it after twenty minutes. With Cloyne leading 2-08 to I-03 at half time,it was a case of going through the motions as Cloyne pressed home their superiority to finish Cloyne 6-14 Sarsfields 3-04.

Cloyne:Alan Reilly,Tom O’Shea,John Ahern,James Northridge,Graham Fleming,Brian Fleming,James Lynch,Vincent Cusack,John Cotter,Thomas Cahill,(0-01)James Nyhan(1-01),David Ring(2-05),Eamon Dunne(3-02),Kevin Lawton,(0-01) Maurice Lynch.(0-02)

Abernethy Cup: Cloyne 4- 06  Imokilly 0- 07

In one’s lifetime there are a lot of decisions that will cause a certain amount of anxiety & disbelief,a lot of the spectators in Rostellan endured a very high level of it during the course of this contest between Cloyne & the Barony, some of the gestations contained a degree of theatrics as we were treated to descriptions of foul play by the man with the whistle which would not be amiss in an aerobics class.

Cloyne’s starting fifteen was minus the services of Maurice Cahill,Mike Naughton & Colm O’Sullivan.Imokilly, so long Cloyne’s bogey team in championship hurling were well up for the game & started with a flourish but it was Cloyne who drew first blood.Nine minutes into the game Paudie O’Sullivan latched on to an inch perfect pass from Phil Cahill & drove the ball low to the left hand corner.Six minutes later provider turned scorer,Phil Cahill had Cloyne two goals up and no reply from Imokilly.John Cotter put Cloyne further in front with a well taken point.Imokilly should have scored what seemed a certain goal two minutes later but Donal Óg Cusack’s alertness prevented Imokilly from registering their first score of the half. After twenty minutes Cloyne were in a commanding position, this was to be Cloyne’s last score of the half.

On twenty five minutes we entered a phase where Imokilly notched up five points (4 from frees) prior to the break.Cloyne’s back line was outstanding,Kilian Cronin & Eoin O’Sullivan mopped up everything.Young Brian Fleming started nervously but settled in well,I think he will come of age this year,he is one of those players that possesses natural ability. For the second half Cloyne introduced Declan Motherway for Ross McCarthy.

The second half was only four minutes old when Imokilly struck with a well taken point. Then we were treated to three minutes of magic from Iain Quinlan in which he scored two identical long range points in quick succession to push Cloyne further ahead. It was then John Cotter’s turn when he edged Cloyne further in front to make it Cloyne 2-04 to  Imokilly’s 0-06.Cloyne were reduced to fourteen men when Domhnall O’Sullivan was red carded which could have been deemed as a harsh decision. Imokilly pulled another point back which was to be their last score of the game, after this it was all Cloyne with Victor Cusack adding to Cloyne’s tally with a scorching goal with about twelve minutes remaining. Then in an off the ball incident in view of the referee which warranted an automatic red card Diarmuid O’Sullivan was fouled. In the resulting free nearly 100 yards out we were treated to one of  those moments that you savour which makes hurling such a great game,Diarmuid scored one of those great points that would deflate any team.Conor Cusack added another point two minutes later.Paudie O’Sullivan finished the game as he started, when he collected a long ball from Diarmuid which was an inch perfect pass and looked as if it was perfected many times in the front garden in Scariff,he duly  buried it in the left hand corner of the net.The second half belonged to Cloyne, they outplayed Imokilly with a brand of power hurling. This Cloyne team were extremely fit & well balanced. As the game progressed they looked as if they had numerous options especially when they were reduced to fourteen men the game plan remained disciplined, this was a good aspect of their play & in the end it paid dividends.
