Slick Cloyne Performance Leaves Killeagh With No Answers

Evening Echo Sponsored SHC

Cloyne 4- 10  Killeagh 3- 06

With just two minutes gone Cloyne raced into a two point lead courtesy of two Paudie O’Sullivan frees.Killeagh literally did not have time to draw breath. It was six minutes before they eventually registered with a point which Diarmuid O’Sullivan duly cancelled out with an excellently taken point a minute later.

Cloyne playing into a strong breeze after a bright opening quarter allowed Killeagh gain control of the tie with 2 goals in the space of three minutes one of them coming from a penalty.Killeagh now enjoyed a four point advantage which was increased with eighteen minutes gone to a five point lead.Cloyne at this juncture looked as if they were going to be overrun,Killeagh were in the acendency,Cloyne were stung, strung out and making errors that were not customary for this team. With nineteen minutes gone enough was enough.Cloyne were peeved & the resulting score & the manner in which it was executed said it all.Diarmuid O’Sullivan gathered inside his own half & literally cut the Killeagh defence to shreds with his low long distance shot to the back of the net.It was at this point that Cloyne cranked up the engine, they did nothing for nearly twenty minutes & then with Sully’s goal you could see Sean Motherway’s game plan taking effect. In the final ten minutes of the half without sounding audacious & with no disrespect to Killeagh,Cloyne trampled all over them.Cloyne supporters were treated to two magical moves as the half eclipsed & who was at the kernel of both moves ?,Diarmuid O’Sullivan. The first goal came as he split the Killeagh defence with an inch perfect pass to his youger brother Paudie, back of the net.A minute later he caused havoc as he ran at the Killeagh defence & dispensed the perfect pass to Conor Cusack who gave the Killeagh keeper no chance. So basically in a ten minute spell Cloyne turned the tie on it’s head, said “goodnight & thank you” & went in at the break with a six point advantage after playing into a strong breeze.

Paudie O’Sullivan continued the momentum with a point from a free a minute into the second half. Two minutes later Killeagh responded with a point.Cloyne frustrated & tantalised Killeagh for the entire second half with their precision passing.Diarmuid O’Sullivan added another point for the red & black. Then in a five minute spell as we entered the final quarter we were treated to two pieces of sheer magic, the first a fantastic point from John Cotter which was worthy of winning any tie & then a trademark goal from the master,Phil Cahill. This gave Cloyne a nine point lead with eleven minutes remaining.A Paudie O’Sullivan free increased it to ten. With seven minutes left on the clock,Kileagh staged a brief revival, too little too late when they pulled back a goal.At the final whistle Cloyne had a seven point winning margin.Cloyne will not be happy with their lapses of concentration in the opening twenty minutes, this is not part of their agenda & the manner in which they prepare, they will have taken it all on board & to quote manager Sean Motherway,”the engine is out of the shed & firmly on the tracks”sums it all up.To the St.Catherines club, thank you all for the wonderful welcome & courtesy extended to Cloyne Hurling & Football Club & to congratulate you on your magnificent new playing facility & preparation,it was indeed an honour to be part of it,thank you all.

Evening Echo SHL

Cloyne 1-19 Erin’s Own 1-16

In a good hour’s hurling Cloyne came out on top to meet Glen Rvrs.in the S/F of the Evening Echo sponsored SHL.The game started brightly as both teams signalled in the early exchanges that they were well up for the contest. In front of a sizeable crowd in near perfect conditions Cloyne were first out of the trap with a Victor Cusack point after 30 seconds.Erin’s Own replied immediately and in the space of 5 minutes consecutive points had given them a 3 point lead.2 points from Colm & 1 from Diarmuid O’Sullivan restored parity. For the next ten minutes of the half both sides exchanged scores. At the 20 minute mark Cloyne had a 1 point advantage when up popped Paudie O’Sullivan to increase Cloyne’s dominance with an excellently worked goal,a minute later a well taken point from the same man ensured that the remainder of the half belonged to Cloyne with 2 further points from Victor Cusack & one each from James Nyhan,Iain Quinlan & David Ring saw Cloyne finish the half with a 7 point advantage. The commencement of the 2nd half was a replica of the 1st with a rapid fire point from Conor Cusack & Erin’s Own were quick to reply. The game was throwing up some excellent passages of play throughout with some well taken scores and overall was played in a very sporting manner by both teams.Early in the second half Conor Cusack severly tested the Erin’s Own keeper with a powerful short range shot that was destined for the back of the net.it was as good a save that I have seen & the appreciation from the home crowd was well & truly warranted. Both teams exchanged points for the remainder of the half & as injury time approached Cloyne had a 6 point cushion.Erin’s Own managed to pull back a goal deep in injury time, but the second half saw Cloyne dominate. It was a hugely entertaining opening to 2006,some excellent scoring & some very good hurling,Manager Sean Motherway should be pleased enough,he now has got a SHL S/F encounter with Glen Rvrs to occupy his thoughts for the next week or two.
