The official programme cover of the Christy Ring memorial unveiling, performed by another great exponent of the game of hurling, the late Mr. Jack Lynch.Cork played Wexford in a highly entertaining challenge match.
Sculptor Yann Goulet said at the commencement of the design of the memorial " When I started to think of designing a Memorial to Christy Ring,I kept in mind that the bronze statue 9ft.high will stand in his native town for hundreds and hundreds of years,an eternal and everlasting tribute to this great hurler. The Christy Ring whose memory that I will perpetuate in bronze, will be the perfect athlete that he was in his youth, strong but elegant like the Apollos of Greek Mythology or Michael Angelo's David, men never marked by the passing of time.
In Christy Ring we had the typification of an ideal Irish athlete and it is as such that he should be remembered by future generations. His determination, the pride for the game he loved, his nobility will be the main characteristics that I will try to depict, not forgetting his great physical strength allied with the ability and delicate balance of movement of a ballet dancer".

Official Programme Cover Of The Unveiling Ceremony May 1st 1983

A proud in day in 'The Home Of Hurling' the unveiling of the Christy Ring Memorial at the entrance to the Cloyne GAA grounds on May 1st 1983 by the late Mr.Jack Lynch TD and former Taoiseach,a fitting tribute fom one great hurler to another.

In the coming months it is hoped to feature the people who have helped shape Cloyne Hurling & Football Club down through the years,at times it is so easy to forget the contributions that these people and their families have made. They have all played a significant part in the elevation of the Red & Black. The club stands as a monument to their great efforts, they were always there through good and not so good times, quietly in the background and some of them thankfully are still with the club today. We are also currently compiling a tribute to the late Paddy O'Connor, with the club hosting an annual tournament for the Paddy O'Connor Memorial Cup with 2003 being the first year.
