Cloyne or in the Irish language Cluain Uamha (The Meadow Of The Caves) is situated in a broad valley. In 580 AD Cairpre Crom,King Of Cashel granted Cluain Uamha one of his royal estates to colman as a site for his monastery.Cloyne was plundered by the danes in 822 & 824 and again in 885 when according to the Annals O f the Four Masters, the Abbot and Prior of Cloyne were murdered. In olden times to be buried in Cloyne had some peculiar virtue. The celebrated Cormac, King & Archbishop of Cashel directed that at his death,he should be buried there.Cloyne is now a hub of through traffic whose flow has been swollen by tourists and day trippers.A lot of development is currently taking place in Cloyne which maybe, will in time have a profound effect on it's character. The inhabitants have inherited a fine tradition and this should be nurtured and held in trust for future generations to enjoy.

The Litton Fountain in the town supplied pure water to the residents in the 19th century. The inscription  on the fountain reads 'The fountain has been erected by E.F.Litton Esq.in memory of his uncle John Litton of Ardavilling who in rememberance of his wife Vescina Litton conferred upon the inhabitants of Cloyne, the blessing of a pure water supply 1879'. The fountain is located at Cloyne Cross enroute to Ballycotton.
