The
County
Football
Championship:
The
Cloyne junior footballers continue their campaign in the Cork County
Junior Football Championship when they line out against Mid-Cork’s
Éire Óg at Ballygarvan on Saturday next (throw in at 5.00 p.m.) in a
semi-final contest. Éire Óg enjoyed a convincing win over Bandon in
the quarter-final stage on Saturday
last.
Despite some fairly
disappointing, but winning, performances in the East Cork
Championship, the team is now playing with a much greater sense of
co-ordination and purpose. The training programme, under selectors
John O’Lomasney, Neil Reilly, and Donie Cahill, has gone very well,
and, hopefully, a good result will be on the
cards.
This is Cloyne’s second
bite of the junior football ‘cherry’ at the semi-final stage.
Unfortunately, the team of 2002 were at the end of a convincing
defeat at the hands of Ilen Rovers who went on the win the county,
and were a senior club within the space of two years. So far, Cloyne
have twice defeated Glanmire (in the first and third rounds), Fr.
O’Neill’s, and Midleton in the East Cork Championship and, pending
the final, were nominated to represent the division in the county.
Their first game saw a fine victory over White’s Cross which enabled
them to qualify for Saturday’s game.
We hope that the Cloyne
squad will rise to the occasion and we wish the management all the
very best of luck on the penultimate
day.
Beir
bua agus beannacht!
UP THE REBELS:
Congratulations to Diarmuid, Dónal Óg, and
Paudie on representing their county in another heart-stopping
encounter, this time against Clare, at Thurles on Sunday last. The
‘big date’ comes up on Sunday week!
ANOTHER CLUB MILESTONE:
Club members were justly proud on Sunday 8th
of June last when three local stalwarts took to the field in the
county colours in the Munster Championship against Tipperary. It was
as usual for Diarmuid and Dónal Óg, but for Paudie, it marked the
real start to a very promising hurling career. Unfortunately, the
game didn’t work out as all of us would have wished, but, as the
saying goes – ‘beidh lá eile againn’.
CLUB
IMPROVEMENTS
After a recent review of club facilities,
repairs have commenced on the dressing rooms, committee room,
referees room and the car part atChristy
Ring Memorial Park.
The works subcommittee, with the aid of club
volunteers were to be found hard at work on Saturday. Musical
encouragement was provided with Paddy Geoghegan’s ‘Rory Gallagher
Collection’ and work is to continue over the next few weeks, with
other musical choices also to be considered! Anyone
interested in helping should contact James Nyhan, Killian Cronin,
Philip Cahill or any committee
member.
When the current works have been completed the
main pitch area will be well up to the standards now required,
having been greatly enhanced by the floodlighting installed
recently.
TEAMS
For the first time in the history of the
club, three teams were fielded in the Senior, Junior A, and Junior C
Leagues. This bodes very well for the future of the hurling section.
The O’Sullivan brothers, Diarmuid and Paudie, along with Donal Óg
Cusack, lined out for Cork on Sunday
last in the Hurling League Semi-Final against Galway. Despite the defeat, we wish them all
the best in the forthcoming All-Ireland
Championships.
